Those interested in fresh eggs and reducing backyard insects will be excited to hear about backyard poultry recently becoming an option in the city of Baudette.

At an April 15, 2024, Special Meeting, the Baudette City Council voted in favor of adopting an application and licensing policy for residents inside of city limits to maintain specific breeds and numbers of poultry in their backyards.

This action was taken following a request made at the March City Council work session.

Mike Hirst, along with other interested community members and some local Cub Scouts, addressed the city council at the March 28th work session to express interest in allowing citizens to raise chickens or quail in their yards within city limits.

John Buttenhoff and Calista Wolf also addressed the council in the interest of allowing this option of keeping poultry.

At the March work session City Zoning Administrator Tom Eaton gave background on the existing ordinance and said that upon review with the city legal advisor, a revision of the ordinance isn’t necessary, but could be allowed with policy changes and permitting.

Considerations and further discussion for quail and chickens, roosters, housing requirements, etc. would later be discussed at a meeting of council members, zoning administrator, and community members, who settled on preliminary guidelines that were presented to the council and approved in a unanimous vote, with a few changes made.

Applications indicate the type and number of poultry, as well as several guidelines for housing and keeping the birds.

The license period runs from Jan 1st to Dec 31st each year. The cost of the license is $25 annually and requires an onsite inspection among other requirements. As of this writing, applications are not yet available under the City Forms section of the City of Baudette website.
